Well it wouldn't fit through the letterbox but FINALLY it has arrived! My new compost bin!
£10 purchase from http://www.nel.getcomposting.com/ (cheaper from here, because the Council pay part of the cost before you! AND you get a little caddy for the kitchen)
If you live in North East Lincolnshire you can also get a copy of a little book on composting for free (RRP £4.95) and a Frequently Asked Questions sheet, to help you on your way!
Getting greener
This is brilliant, because the theme for this week's Rubbish Diet Challenge has been all about gardening.I've been challenged to plant a few salad crops instead of buying large lettuces that I inevitably don't finish, and come in polythene wrappers - if I had my own in the garden I could just go and get the leaves I need for that meal!
I must admit I am not green fingered in the slightest, but with Spring in the air, I am keen to make the most of our garden. Most of it is taken up with a trampoline, admittedly, but the idea of the satisfaction of growing my own basics; carrots, onions etc. is very tempting!
Back to bad habits
This week has been a slump for the rubbish diet with a whole black bin bag going out for the collectors
:( Serves me right for being smug last week!
Lots of recycling went too, nicely separated, but somehow everything I used this week seemed to have packaging that had to go in the regular bin. Future Hubby remembered to put the recycling boxes out, so big pat on the back for him!
Must make more effort with shopping in the next three weeks.
It's worth seeing how others have been getting on with their Rubbish Diet too :
http://www.beyondthebluebin.com/ is one of my favourites!
Great news! Tim from Bringing up Charlie also got his from Get composting too. It's a great site. Enjoy tossing those peelings and watch that rubbish come down :0) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Almost Mrs Average, but I need more peelings! My compost bin got blown about the garden this week! Our prices are actually going to go down in April, thanks to the Council's subsidy, so it's going to be a great time to get composting.
DeleteHello from Reduce Footprint's Meet&Greet!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your new composter - I wonder how it would do if you were to add a few worms? I have a worm bin (really just two plastic tubs with holes in the bottom of one of them, the other to catch the worm "tea"), and find the peels and clippings I put in there are unrecognisable within 1-2 weeks. The plants LOVE the "tea".
Hello there! I will have to go on a worm hunt! Look forward to returning the visits on the Meet and Greet
DeleteHow exciting for you. One day I have enough space to own one as well. Right now we have asmall bin that we bring to our local farmer for composting!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea, lucky local farmer. Keep up the good work.
DeleteGood luck with the Rubbish Diet, found you through Reduce Footprint's M&G Monday
ReplyDeleteThanks, it's all gone a bit quiet recently as I've been away, but will be updating soon. Enjoying the Meet and Greet!
DeleteIt's so great that the councils are paying for greener alternatives finally! Maybe it will make it, eventually, down to London.... Keeps the UK green. It's sad that in the US more communities don't encourage, in fact, discourage a lot of things like line drying and composting!
ReplyDeleteGood on you for starting the Rubbish Diet.
Thanks Jacqueline! I must admit I didn't follow the rubbish diet all the way through to the end, but those that did have blogged and tweeted about it etc. and ended the diet with a zero (or near to as poss) waste week! find out more at www.therubbishdiet.blogspot.co.uk
ReplyDeleteIt's always worth asking your council if they are promoting composting - and what weather for line drying this week eh?!
